What is a Double Ribbon Mixer?
A double blender mixer is a type of powder handling or powder processing machine.
Figure 1 – Sample image of a double ribbon mixer
Its primary use and purpose is to mix and blend various materials, usually dry powders, combining and mixing them as one.
It’s named and labeled as a double blender mixer because it is made up and comprised of two (2) shells or two (2) cones that are positioned above and below one (1) another.
Unlike other types of blenders and mixers, double blender or double cone mixers have agitators or helical blades within the vessel that aid and assist in the blending and the mixing process.
What Causes the Mixing in Double Ribbon Mixer?
The mixing in a double ribbon mixer or a double ribbon mixer happens due to the slow and the careful flowing of particles within a plane of symmetry.
Figure 2 – Image from a clip that describes the mixing process in a double ribbon mixer
In addition to that, the helical blades or the agitators also help and contribute to the mixing and blending process.
When the materials and the powders within the shells or the vessels of the double ribbon mixer bump, get sheared, and get torn down, they mix and blend with one another.
Double Ribbon Mixer Principle
The working or the primary principle of double ribbon mixer is simple: the powders, particles, or the materials are inserted and fed to the blender/mixer and they are mixed and blended continuously until they combine and blend homogenously.
To give you a more detailed and a better-discussed working principle of the double ribbon mixer, it is as follows:
- The powders/particles/materials are fed and supplied to the machine via the feeder or the hopper.
- After all particles, powders, and materials are fed, they are then processed by continuously rotating them within the double blender mixer.
- All the contents within the machine bump and get combined with one another, making the blending and the mixing procedure possible.
That is how the process of blending and mixing happens within a double ribbon mixer.
Other Types Industrial Blenders in the Market
Other than double ribbon mixer, there are other types and kinds of industrial mixers and blenders in the market.
Figure 3 – Trough mixer or ribbon blender, another type of industrial blender/mixer
These machines include:
Ribbon Blenders and Mixers
These are the industrial mixers that contain conical or ribbon-like agitators and blades within the machine that help shear, mix, and blend powders and materials altogether.
Drum Mixers
Drum mixers, from the term alone, are drums wherein you place the powders or the particles you need to work on inside and it’ll tumble until the right consistency, viscosity, and texture is achieved.
V Shaped Blenders
Unlike other types of mixers, V shaped blenders don’t have agitators or blades inside the machine. The blending and mixing procedure happens due to the narrow space of the shells or the vessels.
Paddle Mixers
From the term, paddle mixers mix and blend materials and particles through the form of “paddling” or the back and forth movement of paddles within the machine. They’re usually utilized in the construction or the structural industry.
Emulsifiers
Often used in the cosmetics and the food industry, emulsifiers are blenders and mixers that are ideal for mixing two (2) types of liquids that are challenging and difficult to mix. Through the dispersion of the liquids’ droplets, they combine and mix well with one another.
These are the other types of industrial mixers and blenders that you might encounter in the market!
Double Cone Blenders vs. Ribbon Blender
From their terms alone, you would already have an idea how double ribbon mixer are different from ribbon blenders.
Figure 4 – Difference between ribbon blender and double cone mixer
But, what’s a more detailed explanation of how they are different?
For one, the process of how ribbon blenders mix and blend is using the agitators or the blades inside the machine. Double cone blender, on the other hand, use both agitators and the rotating and twisting motion of the shells or the vessel for the mixing.
Here’s a table that discusses the differences of double cone blenders more.
| Ribbon Blenders | Double Cone Blenders |
| Ribbon blenders are encased in a trough or a container that has a conical or a “ribbon-like” blade or agitator. | Double cone blenders or double blender mixers are encased inside two (2) cone-like structures. |
| The blending and mixing process happens because of the agitators or the blades inside the machine. | The blending and mixing process happens because of the tumbling of the equipment with the aid of the agitators or the blades. |
| Ideal for processing pre-processed granules and powders. | Ideal for coarse powders and particles. |
| Mixing time can occur within 5 to 15 minutes. | Mixing time can occur within 10 to 20 minutes. |
These are the differences between double cone mixers and ribbon blenders.
What Are Agitator Blades For Inside a Double Ribbon Mixer?
Figure 5 – Agitator blades inside a double ribbon mixer
The agitation blades inside a double ribbon mixer are to aid and assist the mixing and the blending procedure that the blender would do.
These blades are used to produce shearing action that would subtly tear down the particles or the materials inside the machine, which is effective in mixing and blending particles and materials with different densities.
How to Choose the Best Double Ribbon Mixer For Your Business?
In choosing a double ribbon mixer, you need to consider a few things.
Specifications of the Mixer
Specs are among the few most important things to look for and note when choosing a double blender mixer. Choosing the specs of the mixer will highly and will greatly depend on the application you’re going to be using it for.
Check everything from the RPM (Revolutions per Minute), Capacity or Quantity, Ease of Application or Use, etc.
Features and Additives
What other features and functionalities does the double blender mixer have? Other than blending and mixing, what other purpose can you use it for?
There are tons of double ribbon mixer in the market that have extra features, so, be sure to check these things out, too.
NOTE: The price may vary when you choose a double blender mixers that has extra features.
What Materials the Mixer Can Work On
Last, but most definitely not least, you need to ensure that the double blender mixer you’re going to purchase will be eligible to work on the specific materials that you’re going to process.
For instance, if you’re going to work on food products like salt, sugar, spices, herbs, and the like, make sure that the double blender mixer you’ll purchase will be able to accommodate this.
Speed and Efficiency of the Mixer
Part of the specifications is the spindle speed, but, separating the fastness and the urgency of how the double blender mixer can work is another factor.
There are ddouble ribbon mixer that operate on a normal pace, while there are others that move at high-fluctuating speeds.
So, check the speed and the spindle range of the double cone blender before purchasing them.
