How Does Pin Mill Pulverizer Work?

The Pin Mills that are majorly used in the industry today work on the combination of a stator and a rotor that operate in tandem to produce pulverized materials.

As shown in the picture above, the pin mills have “pins” that form part of the machine’s stator. On the other hand, “pins” are also attached to the rotating part of the machine which is called the rotor.

The basic principle behind the working of the pin mills is that it converts the kinetic energy of the moving solid particles when they collide with the pins of the stator and rotor. And with the collision with the pins, the solid particle undergoes shearing and is broken into smaller and finer particles.

Once the feed-in material is fed into the rotating pin mill pulverizer, the centrifugal force moves the particles towards the periphery of the rotor. Since the feed-in particles have to move through subsequent sets of intermeshed pins, it is sufficiently sheared and broken down into smaller particles. Furthermore, in some machines, the outer ring or wall of the pin mill is covered with pins or corrugated walls, which further reduces the size of the particles.  Since the pins have a uniform arrangement, the particle leaving the pin mill has a uniform size. These smaller particles are then channeled outside the machine where they are collected. Sometimes, a sieve is also attached to the feed-out part of the machine so that only a specific size of particles can leave the machine.
